Giorgi Sturua

Giorgi Sturua, who is praised for his “burgeoning heroic wood”, has already sung roles including Laca Klemeň (“Jenůfa”) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and Il cavaliere Renato Des Grieux (“Manon Lescaut”) at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt in 2024. His most recent engagements include “The Bells” by Sergei Rachmaninov with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vassili in “Siberia” by Umberto Giordano at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Jules Massenet's “Ah, tout est bien fini... O souverain” from ‘Le Cid’ and Verdi's ”Ciel, che feci... Ciel pietoso” from ‘Oberto’ at the St. Gallen Festival. In the 2022/23 season, the tenor made his debut as Ismaele in “Nabucco” at the Theater Biel Solothurn, as Don José in “Carmen” at the Wrocław Opera and as Cavaradossi in “Tosca” at the Krakow and Wrocław Opera.

Sturua's previous engagements include his appearances at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as Don Juan in Alexander Dargomyzhsky's “The Stone Guest” and Vladimir Igorevich in “Prince Igor” by Alexander Borodin, the roles of Riccardo in “Un Ballo in Maschera”, Alfredo in “La Traviata”, Turiddu in “Cavalleria rusticana” and Vaudemont in “Iolanta” at the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. The tenor also sang Abessalom in Sakaria Paliashvili's “Abessalom and Eteri” at the Georgian National Opera in Tbilisi. On the concert stage, Sturua has appeared in Nice (France) in the title role in Rimsky-Korsakov's “Sadko”, as Vladimir Igorevich in “Prince Igor” at the Brucknerhaus in Linz (Austria) and as Sinodal in Rachmaninov's “The Demon” at the Queen Elizabeth Concert Hall in London.

Giorgi Sturua is a graduate of the Young Artist Program of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he completed his training under the direction of Dmitry Vdovin. During his time in the Young Artists Program, Sturua took part in numerous performances and appeared in recitals with Liubov Orfenova, Semyon Skigin and Giulio Zappa. He has taken part in master classes with Eva Marton, Alessandro Amoretti, Elizabeth Vidal, Makvala Kasrashvili, Paul Curran and Neil Shicoff. Sturua began his musical education in his home country of Georgia at the Kutaisi Conservatory of Music. During his studies, Sturua was a soloist at the Balanchivadze Kutaisi State Opera, where he appeared as Abessalom in Paliashvili's “Abessalom and Eteri” and in the Italian repertoire.
