Ilaria Lanzino

Ilaria Lanzino works across Europe as a director, lecturer and librettist. After she studied singing, she studied German language and literature at the Ca' Foscari University in Venice. She gained her first theatre experience as a chorister at the Theater an der Wien and subsequently as a trainee director and assistant at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the Theater Dortmund and others. She has worked with directors such as Christof Loy, Benedikt von Peter, Jens-Daniel Herzog, Elisabeth Stöppler, David Bösch, Dietrich W. Hilsdorf, Axel Köhler and Michael Thalheimer. She made her directorial debut in 2017 at Theater Dortmund with Schreier's children's opera "Wunderland". From 2017 to 2022, the Pisa-born director was assistant director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where she also directed productions such as "Gold!" (Evers), "Meister Pedros Puppenspiel" (de Falla), "Der Kaiser von Atlantis" (Ullmann) and Diana Syrse's world premiere of "Der Kiosk". As a director, she has made guest appearances at the MusikTheater an der Wien (Caccini "La Liberazione di Ruggiero"), Staatstheater Nürnberg (Telemann "Pimpinone", Bartók "Herzog Blaubarts Burg", Donizetti's "L'elisir d'amore", Walpurgi's "Talestri", Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor"), at the Leipzig Opera (Musgrave "Mary, Queen of Scots"), at the Aalto MusikTheater Essen (Loewe "My Fair Lady"), Staatstheater Wiesbaden (Moniuszko "Straszny Dwór"), Landestheater Coburg (Verdi "Falstaff") and at the Theater Dortmund (Tidrow "Kirsas Musik"). In 2020 Ilaria Lanzino was awarded 1st place in the European Opera Directing Award, and a year later her production "Der Kiosk" was nominated for the international YAM Awards. For her adaptation of Stanisław Moniuszko's "Jawnuta" for the Poznań Teatr Wielki (Poland) she received the International Opera Award in the category "Best Rediscovered Work". Since 2022, she has been teaching as a lecturer for scenic lessons at the University of Music in Würzburg.
The Deutsche Oper am Rhein is currently showing Ilaria Lanzino's interpretation of Lucia Ronchetti's "Das fliegende Klassenzimmer".
