Martin Braun

Martin Braun completed his violin studies in his home town of Berlin and his conducting studies in Vienna with distinction. From 1991 to 1998 he was chief conductor of the Vienna Academic Symphony Orchestra, then Kapellmeister at the Moravian Theater in Olomouc and from 2001 to 2004 First Kapellmeister of the Wuppertal Bühnen. Further permanent engagements have also taken him to Heidelberg and Würzburg. From 2008 to 2013, he was a permanent guest conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, and from 2013 to 2017 Artistic Director of the Lower Austrian Youth Symphony Orchestra. From 2017-2019 he was engaged as Kapellmeister at the Landestheater Linz. His last production there, Joseph Beer's "Polish Wedding", was awarded the Austrian Music Theater Prize 2020.
Guest conducting engagements have taken him to the Komische Oper Berlin, the Volksoper Vienna, the Frankfurt Opera, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, the Landestheater Linz and Innsbruck, the China National Symphony Orchestra, the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra, the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra, the North German Philharmonic Orchestra and the Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra. One focus of his work is the historically informed performance of baroque and (early) classical repertoire with modern instruments. In this context, his great successes with performances of Gianfrancesco di Majo's "Ifigenia in Tauride" in Wuppertal in 2008 and Rameau's "Platée" in 2010, Handel's "Il trionfo del tempo e del disinganno" in 2015 and Haydn's "Il mondo della luna" in 2017 at the Landestheater Linz are particularly noteworthy. In addition to his work as a conductor, Martin Braun is also a committed teacher: for example, he led a major class in orchestral conducting at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Performing Arts Leipzig from 2005 to 2008 and at the Bruckner University Linz from 2016 to 2018.
