The Romanian soprano Adela Zaharia graduated as a vocalist and pianist from the Academy of Music in Cluj-Napoca. She made her debut at the Romanian National Opera in 2010 as Gilda (Verdi ‘Rigoletto’), followed by Norina (Donizetti ‘Don Pasquale’), Musetta (Puccini ‘La Bohème’), and Micaëla (Bizet ‘Carmen’). Following her studies, she was a member of the Opera Studio at the Komische Oper Berlin, joining the full ensemble there from 2012 to 2014, where she sang major leading roles such as Donna Anna (Mozart ‘Don Giovanni’). In 2012 she won the Hariclea Darclée International Singing Competition and in the summer of 2017 Plácido Domingo’s prestigious Operalia competition in two categories.
Adela Zaharia has been an ensemble member at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein since 2015/16. Her singing roles here have included the title role in Donizetti’s ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ – one of her most celebrated roles – Pamina (Mozart ‘Die Zauberflöte’), Donna Anna, Konstanze (Mozart ‘Die Entführung aus dem Serail’), Violetta Valéry (Verdi ‘La traviata’), Gilda, Maria Stuarda (Donizetti), the title role in Lange’s ‘Die Schneekönigin’ and Elvira (Bellini ‘I puritani’). International guest engagements regularly take her to major opera and concert houses such as Het Concertgebouw, Los Angeles Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, both Deutsche and Komische Oper in Berlin, Oper Leipzig, De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Real in Madrid, Royal Opera House in London and also the Munich Opera Festival. On the concert platform she made her debut at the BBC Proms in 2017 with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in the world premiere of Ian Bell’s ‘Aurora’.
