In order to stop Alberich's quest for power, Wotan, the father of the gods, has bequeathed nine Valkyries to gather an army of fallen heroes for him in Valhalla. His son Siegmund, born of a liaison with a human woman, is to recapture the ring for him as a hero. But unknowingly and against Wotan's plans, Siegmund falls in love with his twin sister Sieglinde and conceives Siegfried with her. When Wotan's favorite daughter Brünnhilde disobeys her father's order to leave Siegmund to his doom, he banishes her to a rock of fire from which only the strongest hero can rescue her. This hero will be Siegfried.
