Albert Horne

Albert Horne hails from South Africa and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. From 2007-2014 he was chorus master and conductor at the Cape Town Opera in South Africa, and under his leadershihp the chorus was voted "Chorus of the Year" at the 2013 International Opera Awards in London. In 2012 he was chorus master for Gershwin’s "Porgy and Bess" with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle.
From 2014 to 2025 he was chorus master and conductor at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, where he also conducted numerous operas, ballets and symphony concerts, including Jörg Widmann’s „Babylon“, Britten’s „Peter Grimes“, Puccini’s „Madama Butterfly“, „La Boheme“ and „Il trittico“, Janacek’s „Glagolitische Messe“, Bernstein’s „Candide“, Mussorgsky’s „Boris Godunov“, Turnage’s „Anna Nicole“, Sondheim’s „Follies“ and the world premieres of Søren Nils Eichberg’s „Schönerland“ and „Oryx and Crake“. Additionally, he also took on the role of Coordinating Musical Leader in the house from 2022-2024.
In May 2025 he was guest chorus master for the Accentus chamber choir in Paris for a staged production of Schumann’s „Das Paradies und die Peri“, conducted by Laurence Equilbey.
As an orchestral conductor, he has worked with the Orchestra Victoria (Melbourne), the Orchestre Pasdeloup (Paris) and at the opera houses in Bordeaux, Malmö, Tel Aviv, London (ENO) and Cardiff (WNO), among others, and conducted the Rhineland-Palatinate State Youth Orchestra, with which he toured through Germany, South Africa and Botswana in 2018. Other guest engagements include concerts with the Munich Symphony Orchestra in the Gasteig and the Prinzregententheater in Munich as well as with the Rheinische Orchesterakademie Mainz. He has also performed as piano accompanist in the USA, Great Britain, Australia, France, Sweden and Germany. He is also a founding member and a member of the steering committee of Opera Europa's chorus forum.
Beginning in the 2025/26 season, Horne is Choir Director at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
