Götter­dämmerung

The thread of fate spun by the three Norns snaps. The gods have served their purpose and, in their hall of Valhalla, long for nothing more than the end. Meanwhile, Siegfried leaves his beloved Brünnhilde in search of new adventures and falls into the clutches of the Gibichungs, Gunther and Gutrune, and their dark half-brother Hagen. Caught in a web of intrigue and betrayal, the hero Siegfried ultimately meets his end – and Brünnhilde bears some of the blame. Yet in the end, it will be her who returns the ring to the Rhine maidens, thereby breaking Alberich’s curse once and for all.

Richard Wagner’s tetralogy ends in a conflagration of the world; the reign of the gods is over and irrevocably transfers to mankind. With a musical motif that is heard only twice in the entire “Ring” narrative, Brünnhilde becomes the saviour of the world.
